Turf Agronomy Update

Agronomy Update: RattleSnake Point
As winter fades and we begin preparing the course for the season ahead, April is a critical month for assessment and recovery. While the course may look ready from a distance, this early spring period is one of the most important of the year. The work we do now sets the stage for healthy, resilient turf as we move into the growing season.
Here’s a look at what our team is focusing on and what you can expect to see around the property in the coming weeks.
Assessing Winter Turf
Winter can leave its mark on the course in a number of ways, and much of our attention this month is on identifying and managing these areas:
-
Desiccation: Cold, windy weather can draw moisture from turf while the ground remains frozen, particularly on greens and elevated areas. As soil temperatures rise, we monitor these spots carefully to determine whether they will recover naturally or need additional support.
-
Ice Damage: Extended ice cover limits oxygen to the turf, sometimes affecting plant health. As snow recedes and surfaces dry, we’re evaluating greens and fairways for any signs of delayed recovery.
-
Snow Mold & Surface Disease: Prolonged snow cover can encourage fungal activity. Many affected areas bounce back quickly once growth resumes, but close monitoring is key during this transition.
-
Tree & Debris Cleanup: Winter winds and snow loads often leave broken limbs and debris. Removing this material improves airflow and sunlight exposure, which is critical for early-season turf health.
It’s worth noting that early spring recovery is driven more by soil temperature than air temperature. Patience now allows the turf to rebuild naturally and safely.
Bringing the Irrigation System Online
April is also the time to get the irrigation system back in service. This is a careful, phased process that includes:
-
Gradually pressurizing the system
-
Inspecting lines and valves for winter damage
-
Testing each head for proper coverage
Having the system fully operational now allows us to respond quickly as growth begins, ensuring proper water management—a key factor in long-term turf health.
Laying the Foundation for a Strong Season
April weather can be unpredictable. While warm days are encouraging, meaningful turf growth begins only when soil temperatures consistently rise. Our approach this month is deliberate: encourage recovery without pushing growth too aggressively.
The goal is simple—build stability and set the foundation for an exceptional season ahead. Our team takes great pride in preparing RattleSnake Point for another year of outstanding playing conditions. While some areas may take a little longer to fully green up, every step we’re taking now supports long-term health and consistency.
Thank you for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming you back to the course this spring.
Sincerely,
